Organized in 1925 by public referendum, the district now owns more than 60 properties consisting of over 16,000 acres. The Forest Preserve Commission governs the District and handles the District business of establishing policies and acquisition of open space for the citizens of Kane County.  The acquisition of open space has become a priority for the District.
