The Friends of Hackmatack was formed to
facilitate the establishment of the Hackmatack National Wildlife
Refuge in the northeastern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin.
The refuge will conserve our area’s unique natural landscapes,
plants and wildlife; link existing open space areas; create
recreational opportunities and provide long-term economic
benefits to the residents of our region.
In April US Fish & Wildlife Service approved the study to
determine the feasibility of establishing this new National
Wildlife Refuge.
Come to the Noon Network to learn more about this wonderful
project within our Fox River Watershed.

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for
Planning (CMAP) is the delegated authority for the region’s
areawide water quality management plan.
CMAP entered into an agreement with the Illinois Environmental
Protection Agency (IEPA) to complete four watershed-based plans
within the Fox River Basin.
Watershed planning commences in September in Blackberry Creek
and Ferson-Otter Creek watersheds (Lower Fox River, Kane and
Kendall counties) and in Sleepy Hollow Creek and Silver Creek
watersheds (Upper Fox River, McHenry County). Funding for these
projects was provided by the IEPA through Section 604(b) of the
Clean Water Act (CWA).
The Conservation Foundation (TCF), Environmental Defenders of
McHenry County (EDMC), and the Fox River Ecosystem Partnership
(FREP) are partners in the planning process and have received
grants from CMAP. TCF and EDMC will serve as local watershed
coordinators in the Lower Fox and Upper Fox watersheds
respectively, convene local stakeholders and execute an outreach
plan.
FREP will support the outreach and education effort by upgrading
their subwatersheds webpage, highlight watershed planning
activity in their e-newsletter – “Downstream” and host a Noon
Network in each of the four watersheds.
The Fox River Study Group is also involved as the hydrologic and
water quality simulation models being developed for them by the
Illinois State Water Survey will be used to estimate
watershed-pollutant loads. Thus, CMAP is supporting a
collaborative structure for conserving the Fox River, an
important source of regional water supply.
The planning process and watershed plans are to be completed by
December 31, 2011. |

Rain Garden Initiative - Thanks to a grant from the
Kane County Riverboat Grant Program, FREP has been able to
establish the Kane County Rain Garden Initiative. Because rain
gardens benefit the entire watershed, the resources on these
pages are for all.
Rain Garden Registry - We are especially
eager to build a database of rain gardens that exist, are being
built, or are planned for in the Fox watershed. Visit the page
link and complete and return the form to include your rain
garden in this registry. |
Updates:
We are starting to get more responses for the
rain garden registry. We hope to get a few more and we will
create the database soon. So please register your rain garden
using the form online.
Visit the Demonstration Rain Garden at St.
Charles Horticultural Research Farm
Rt. 38 & Peck Road, St. Charles. The garden is at the northwest corner of the
intersection.
Look for the new informational signage at the garden. |
