We will then carpool to go to the site, 5
minutes away. Interested parties can drive or
walk through the 3.65 miles of trails and view
the ponds, terraces and bio-swales.
The Jelke Creek Bird Sanctuary Restoration
Project lies within a 239-acre site owned and
managed by Dundee Township and located southwest
of the Village of Sleepy Hollow in northern Kane
County, Illinois. Approximately 160 acres of
the site have been severely disturbed and
degraded due to historic gravel quarry
operations. The mining activities created
topsoil stockpile berms, spoil piles, mine
tailings, and extensive moderately to steeply
sloped areas that were poorly vegetated and
exhibited gully, sheet and rill erosion. Water
quality impacts on Jelke Creek included
siltation/sedimentation, nutrient enrichment,
and habitat degradation.
The Project was substantially constructed in
November 2009 and is expected to be finalized in
2010. Restoration included re-locating
260,000cy of soil, re-grading slopes,
re-spreading the topsoil stockpiles, installing
native plant materials in the re-spread topsoil
zones, and constructing the following Best
Management Practices:
* Biofiltration swales totaling 3,250 linear
feet to treat and infiltrate runoff from the
site;
* Conversion of three (3) existing mining ponds
into stormwater wetlands to improve pollutant
removal before discharging stormwater; and
* Construction of six (6) stormwater detention
basins to improve water quality, remove
suspended and soluble nonpoint source
pollutants, enhance habitat and aesthetics, and
improve water retention and other beneficial
hydrologic functions.

FREP's Annual Conversations About
Conservation With Our Legislators
Final plans are currently being made for this annual program,
now moved to September from the traditional March timeframe.
This year the event will be held in the northern part of the
Watershed, at Grant High School in Fox Lake. Our thanks to
Ingrid Danler of Fox Waterway Agency for making the
arrangements. She is currently finalizing a day and time with
her legislative contacts.
Another edition of the Downstream will
be sent out as soon as plans are finalized. We hope many of you
can join us.

Rain Garden Initiative - Thanks to a grant from the
Kane County Riverboat Grant Program, FREP has been able to
establish the Kane County Rain Garden Initiative. Because rain
gardens benefit the entire watershed, the resources on these
pages are for all.
Rain Garden Registry - We are especially
eager to build a database of rain gardens that exist, are being
built, or are planned for in the Fox watershed. Visit the page
link and complete and return the form to include your rain
garden in this registry. |
